Mobile internet will bring €95bn

The European Economy will benefit from €95 billion (£75 billion) if the TV spectrum is opened for mobile broadband use, new research has claimed.

A study, Getting the Mmost Oout of the Ddigital Ddividend, by Spectrum Value Partners, commissioned by Ericsson, Nokia, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone, has found the money could be created from only releasing one quarter of the band.

"This UHF release to mobile will create cheaper broadband services for consumers on the move across Europe and will promote growth in the use of mobile browsing, email and video services," commented Janice Hughes, chief executive.

Ofcom has confirmed plans to auction the UK’s spectrum and will release the bands on a service neutral basis, allowing organisations to use them as they see fit.

Philip Rutnam, partner in charge of spectrum policy, said: "The release of the 2.6 GHz radio spectrum will create opportunities for fresh innovation, new services and competition for the benefit of consumers in the UK."
