London mayor searches revealed

Search statistics have revealed insights into the upcoming election for London’s mayor.

Organic search figures from Hitwise show that Conservative mayoral candidate Boris Johnson has attracted more interest from web users.

Labour’s incumbent mayor Ken Livingstone and Liberal Democrat challenger Brian Paddick were found to be trailing in popularity.

Each candidate’s official website was the source of choice for web surfers, Hitwise found.

Wikipedia - the second most popular overall destination for candidate information from organic searches - attracted 31.6 per cent of Mr Johnson’s queries, compared with 18 per cent of those for Mr Livingstone and 19.3 per cent for Mr Paddick.

Elsewhere, Mr Livingstone outpointed his rivals by around 2:1 when it came to news media searches.

Robin Goad at Hitwise counselled against using the search statistics to speculate on the result of May 1stt’s election, however.

"Searches do not equal votes," he commented.
