MySpace launches apps gallery

New applications have been launched by social networking site MySpace, InformationWeek reports.

The new Application Gallery allows users to browse galleries of widgets and to add them to their profiles through drag and drop.

It follows MySpace opening up its network for third-party developers to build applications two months ago.

Categories included in the gallery encompass music and politics, quizzes and polls - and an extensive collection of video apps.

Chief executive of the site Chris DeWolfe commented: "MySpace was the original open platform, and the MySpace Application Gallery is the evolution of that vision, taking MySpace users around the world to the next level and empowering them to take control of their online presence."

Applications are useful for such sites, as they tend to attract pay per click advertisers due to their keeping users viewing pages for longer.

Figures from MySpace show that 2.1 million widgets have been downloaded by users on the site.
