News Corp builds online ad network

Media magnate Rupert Murdopch is planning a major entry to the world of online marketing, with a division of his News Corp business set to launch an advertising sales network.

Fox Interactive Media (FIM) is reportedly to launch a service provisionally-titled FIM Serve as early as next year.

"We’re well down the path in terms of discussions with some of the other News Corp properties to do ad serving," said FIM president Peter Levinsohn at the Reuters Media Summit in New York yesterday.

"Ultimately we’ll take the company off network and become an ad network for assets outside of the News Corporation empire."

This follows the current trend of new and old media firms to grab a chunk of the internet advertising market, with the likes of Microsoft, Google, Yahoo! and AOL all trying to establish dominance in the fast-growing industry.

Mr Levinsohn noted that there is significant competition, but said that FIM’s current focus on website display advertising will not see it come into direct rivalry with the search engines.
