MySpace target for free music downloads
Reports have claimed that MySpace is set to add free ad-funded music downloads to its portfolio, facilitating major pay-per-click (ppc) proceeds for willing advertisers.
Record labels have recently been said to be more amenable to the idea of providing selected free content for download – and News Corp-owned MySpace now looks like it could be a prime candidate.
The social network already provides free music streaming from some seven million professional and amateur bands, with an official downloading service likely to cement its role as a leading web portal for music lovers.
DRM-free downloads from major labels are said to be in the offing, with the site’s huge user base offering the prospect of more than ample advertising proceeds and thus a means of funding the service.
While PaidContent.org has claimed that an agreement between the social media giant and record companies could be only weeks away, reports recently suggested that Google would instead harness a free download deal with the music industry.
The search engine giant was rumoured to be interested in cracking the Chinese search market by offering free music downloads, requiring the collaboration of labels such as Universal Music.
