Affiliate marketing use ‘jumps 45 per cent’

Affiliate marketing in the UK grew by as much as 45 per cent last year, new figures have suggested.

The industry generated more than £3 billion in online sales, up from £2.16 billion in 2006, claimed the Affiliate Marketing Networks Buyers’ Guide, undertaken by E-Consultancy.

The study found that commissions and fees paid out to affiliate networks alone totalled some £186 million in the last 12 months – an increase of around 40 per cent from the £133 million recorded in 2006.

E-consultancy’s head of research Linus Gregoriadis explained: "Affiliate marketing continues to gain momentum because the performance-based model is so popular with advertisers.

"The whole industry is getting more professional and 2007 was definitely a big year for affiliate marketing. The channel has become much more strategic and boardrooms are starting to take notice."

Online spending is also surging, with figures from web retail organisation IMRG revealing that UK online retailers generated some £46.6 billion
