Broadband uptake to fuel internet ads
Increased broadband uptake will fuel online advertising spending on a global scale, a new report claims.
A study from consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), entitled Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2007-2011, says that social media sites, which are driving increased usage of the internet, will also have part to play in soaring advertising spend.
"Online advertising is growing explosively in each region, fuelled by rising broadband penetration and the growing use of the internet for social networking and as an entertainment and media centre," the study claims.
"Continued growth in broadband subscribers and increasingly fast broadband speeds will fuel internet advertising."
By 2011, online advertising will account for 14 per cent of all global advertising expenditures - placing the internet ahead of radio and magazines as an advertising platform.
Last year, global internet spend increased by 37.9 per cent to $31.6 billion - and PwC expects this total to double to $73.1 billion at an annualised growth rate of 18.3 per cent by 2011.
