Internet ‘is most essential entertainment medium’
Firms providing entertainment through the web have been reminded of the importance of search engine optimisation (SEO), following the publication of a report by Edison Media Research which revealed that the internet is now considered the "most essential" entertainment medium.
One third (33 per cent) of US consumers aged 12 and over chose the internet as the most important medium in their lives for information and entertainment, ahead of radio (17 per cent) and newspapers (ten per cent), but just behind television (36 per cent).
For those aged under 45 years-old however, the internet actually led television in every category and it was also voted as the "most cool and exciting" medium by 38 per cent, compared to 35 per cent for TV.
Only consumers aged above 45 put television in first place, suggesting the significance of the net will continue to grow in the coming years. In 2002, the internet trailed TV by 19 per cent and radio by six per cent.
"It is not a stretch to say that the Internet has become just as important as television as an important source of information and entertainment," said Larry Rosin, president of Edison Media Research. "It is entirely possible that the Internet will lead in all positive categories five years from now."
